Horsepower and kilowatts are not competing kinds of engine power. They are two unit systems describing the same output, much like miles and kilometres describe distance. The tricky part is identifying which horsepower definition the specification uses.

One worked case
A rating of 200 mechanical hp converts as 200 × 0.745699872 = 149.14 kW. If the same number means 200 PS, the result is 147.10 kW. That 2.04 kW difference is not a tuning change; it comes from the definition of the unit.
Use the answer with context
Vehicle brochures in different markets may use kW, bhp, hp or PS. Keep the original unit in your notes and round only the final result. Dyno figures can also differ because one source measures crank output and another measures power at the wheels. A conversion cannot reconcile those testing differences.

Treating hp and PS as identical is common in casual listings. So is converting a peak rating and then comparing it with a continuous motor rating. For an EV, note whether the figure is peak, sustained or limited by software and temperature.

If a listing uses “hp” without a definition, do not pretend the last decimal is meaningful. Keep the converted value to one or two decimals and preserve the original label. That is enough precision for comparing specifications while avoiding a false impression that two different dyno tests are identical.
