The monthly payment on a car loan can look manageable while the total repayment tells a different story. The reason is amortisation: interest is calculated on the balance still outstanding, so the early payments usually contain the largest interest portion.

The relationship behind the number

Payment = P × r(1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where P is principal, r is the monthly rate and n is the number of payments.

Numbers on a real vehicle

Borrow $24,000 for 60 months at a 7.2% annual rate. The monthly rate is 0.072 ÷ 12 = 0.006. Substituting those values gives a payment of about $477.43. Total scheduled payments are $477.43 × 60 = $28,645.80, so interest is approximately $4,645.80 before any fees or taxes. The first month’s interest alone is $24,000 × 0.006 = $144.

Before you compare two results

As the principal falls, the interest charge falls too, even though the scheduled payment may remain level. A deposit reduces the amount borrowed; a shorter term usually raises the monthly payment but cuts interest. Compare the lender’s APR, fees, taxes, settlement charges and payment date—not just the advertised rate.

Where estimates commonly go wrong

A zero-percent headline may apply only to selected models or a short term and can replace a cash rebate. Another mistake is treating an estimated calculator figure as an offer. The finance contract is the authority, especially for early repayment rules and optional products.

Keep the numbers useful over time

Conditions change. Fuel prices move, tyres wear, a battery loses usable energy in cold weather, and a vehicle’s mileage changes its resale value. Date your estimate and note the market or unit standard it uses. A dated, explainable estimate is more useful than a highly precise number with no trail back to its assumptions.

For comparisons, change one variable at a time. That reveals what is actually driving the result and avoids the false confidence that comes from changing distance, price and efficiency together.

A small habit that improves every estimate

Use a notebook or phone note with four columns: input, number, unit and source. It takes longer than typing three figures from memory, but it makes later corrections straightforward. You can replace a fuel price without accidentally replacing the MPG standard, or update an odometer reading without losing the earlier baseline.

For comparisons, keep the method fixed. Compare two cars with the same route, passengers, price date and ownership period. That is more informative than collecting impressive-looking figures from different adverts and hoping the labels line up.

Use a second scenario, not a second guess

Once the first answer is on screen, change one assumption that could realistically move. For a journey that might mean adding a detour; for a tyre calculation it may mean comparing an approved alternative; for finance it may mean a shorter term. Keeping every other input unchanged tells you how much that single choice matters. Write down the result and the assumption beside it.

This is also a useful way to spot implausible inputs. If doubling a distance barely changes a fuel bill, something is wrong. If a small tyre-profile change produces an enormous diameter difference, check the rim conversion and percentage calculation. A quick sense check often catches a typo before it becomes an expensive decision.

One detail worth carrying forward

Ask the lender for an amortisation schedule if the quote is hard to read. It should show how much of each payment reduces principal and how much is interest. That schedule is also the quickest way to test whether an extra payment shortens the term or merely advances the next due date.
